Artcell (আর্টসেল) is a progressive metal band of Bangladesh. The band is arguably the first progressive metal band of the country and usually experiments with tunes from other metal genres such as grunge and thrash. The current band members were school friends in Dhaka. Ershad used to be the guitarist of a band named Tantrik back in 1999. Current vocalist, Lincoln, joined Tantrik just before the group disbanded. They were looking for a bassist and a drummer, when through friends, they met Cezanne and Shaju. Cezanne the Basist is a Civil Enggr. of Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) The members later renamed their band to Artcell in August 1999 and the band was officially formed in November 1999. Artcell lead the young generation of kids from Dhaka city, who were thus far accustomed to only English rock-metal and were not enthused by commercial pop music, which until the late 90s was the only genre of modern music in Bangladesh, by performing in many "underground" rock concerts, many of which were organised by various online forums and IRC groups such as BDPunks, AmaderGaan and AlterBD. Their first album "Onno Somoy" brought them to worldwide fame amongst Bangladeshi music fans, featuring hits like Onno Shomoy, Pothchola & Bhul Jonmo. Later on, they published their second album Aniket Prantor which was also hit. Now, Artcell is undoublty the number-1 rock band of Bangladesh, and had their material not been restricted by language barriers, they could easily be named one of the top rock-metal bands in the world today. They are still performing regularly at various concerts mainly around the capital city of Dhaka, and their success has inspired a whole new generation of budding talents coming out of the youth of this tiny, yet talented and resourceful country of Bangladesh.
