Altiplano was formed in Vallenaren, Chile in 1976, and, with the guidance of the band Diabla Boliviana, they were able to learn the technique and mystique of playing wind instruments, which would mark their own musical style. By 1979, Altiplano had performed all over Chile. Recorded their disc, "El cantar Andino," and were even invited to perform on Ecuadorian television and record their LP, "Altiplano al Ritmo Endiablado." Between 1980 and 1984 the group dedicated itself to musical research and learning about Ecuadorian culture. They participated in indigenous celebrations and gave concerts throughout the country. In 1984-1985 Altiplano toured in Europe for the first time. They later returned to Ecuador and participated in variuous concerts in the country. From 1985 to 1988 the band not only recorded their album, "Mas alla de los Andes" but also filmed a music video, gave seminars, and guidance to other music groups. From 1989 to 1999, Altiplano toured all over Europe with other musicians such as Pablo Milanes and Mercedes Sosa. In the 24 years that Altiplano has existed as a band, they have recorded 5 LPs and 12 CDs which demonstrate their different musical styles. The six-member band includes Ramiro Acosta, Pepe Ubilla, Fernando Villablanca, Mauricio Vicencio, Estanislao Cruz, and Stalin Gonzalez. Not to be confused with Altiplano from Peru.
