Altan Urag is a folk-rock band formed in Mongolia in 2002. The band's music fuses traditional Mongolian folk music and sound with contemporary rock music influences. The name Altan Urag ("Алтан Ураг" in Mongolian) can be loosely translated as "Golden Lineage" or "Golden Kin", referring to Chinggis Khan and his ancestors. Instruments used in composing and performing the music of Altan Urag include percussion and traditional Mongolian instruments - morin khuur (horse head fiddle), ikh khuur (grand horse head fiddle), bishguur (traditional horn) and yoochin. The vocalists use throat and long inging techniques and all were trained in traditional and classical Mongolian music. The band signed Sonor Records and released their second album - "Made in Altan Urag", perhaps their best-known release - in 2004. Recently the band has come out with promotional music videos - "Mother Mongolia", "Requiem", "Waves & Mother Mongolia", "The Blue Mark", "RaKH II", "See-Saw" and "The Beast". Their music was featured prominently in the 2006 movie Khadak and in the 2007 movie Mongol.
